Lawn Watering Restrictions

August 29, 2012, 4:50 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Lawn Watering Restrictions
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

If you've been watering your lawn in Sioux Falls, you need to change your schedule.

The lack of water splashing over the spillway on the diversion channel shows just how low the Big Sioux River has become.  Now that the flow has dropped to less than 50 cubic feet per second (CFS) north of the city, there are some new watering restrictions to know about.  That includes watering your lawn just one time per week.

“We've certainly noticed that some of our customers have already cut back.  We're asking them to cut back on lawn watering some more to conserve our water supply given the flow we have on the river and the outlook we have on rain and the flow upstream. We need to make sure we have water available for essential functions,” Trent Lubbers of Sioux Falls Public Works said.

City officials continue to monitor the river's level.  If it drops below 20 CFS, they'll go to yet another level of restrictions.

“Only Mother Nature can determine that.  Hopefully we get some rain up in our watershed, even if it doesn't happen in Sioux Falls.  If we get some rain up in our watershed upstream in the Big Sioux River, that will certainly help us out,” Lubbers said.

Here is the city’s watering schedule based on the last number of your address:

0 Monday
1 Tuesday
2 & 3 Wednesday
4 Thursday
5 Friday
6 & 7 Saturday
8 & 9 Sunday

The Level 2 watering stage does allow hand watering of vegetation such as trees, plants and gardens as well as washing vehicles at home and commercial vehicle washing.  Residents are also restricted from washing outdoor surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways and parking lots.

You can find a complete guide of the Sioux Falls watering stages and other resources on the city's Water Conservation page.
