Latest Drought Monitor

April 12, 2012, 5:19 PM by Scot Mundt

Latest Drought Monitor

April is usually the time when area lakes and rivers benefit from spring snow melt, but that that's not the case this year.  While Thursday morning's rain was just enough to settle the dust in KELOLAND, we'll need a lot more to bust the drought.

The latest drought monitor has severe drought widespread in Minnesota and Iowa.  Just recently, the severe drought category has slipped into eastern South Dakota.  Western KELOLAND has the moderate drought category expanding as well, covering much of the western plains of South Dakota.

April is usually the time when we start to ramp up some of the moisture totals as average rain across the state ranges from two and a half to three inches.  You can still expect rain amounts to be over an inch for areas of KELOLAND through Monday, which is good because there are some of us who haven't seen moisture since last month.
