Larry Pressler Shows Support For Gay Marriage In SD

Larry Pressler Shows Support For Gay Marriage In SD

U.S. Senate Candidate Larry Pressler is officially showing his support for gay marriage in South Dakota.

Wednesday, Pressler filed a "Friend of the Court" brief, also known as an Amicus Curiae. The brief states that Pressler views gay marriage as a civil rights matter.

He says South Dakota has many connections, including the U.S. Armed Forces that brings in people from all over, who are legally married in other states.

That's why he believes they should have the same legal rights here as well.

"As those folks come in to South Dakota, they will get here and discover they cannot adopt children, or they can't buy a home. Or they can't function as a regular married couple. So as a practical matter, South Dakota has to get in step with this. But also it's a matter of fundamental civil rights," said Pressler.

Pressler was also one of the Amici in a U.S. Supreme Court case in favor of gay marriage in California.

The brief does not legally have to be considered by the courts.
