Large Hail, Wind Damage SW Minnesota Property

Large Hail, Wind Damage SW Minnesota Property

People in Southwest Minnesota are cleaning up after severe weather hit the area Thursday evening.

Much of the damage was in and around Hills where strong winds, rain and hail tore down branches of large trees and flattened gardens and crops.

Melvin Paulsen's sweet corn was flattened after hail the size of golf balls ripped through his garden.

"All of a sudden it rained and hailed. It stripped up pretty good but won't hurt any of our [seed] corn," Paulsen said.

The storm spared his most profitable seed corn.  The crop matured enough to withstand the wind and hail. But a few miles away, other corn field wasn't so lucky.

"It hailed quite a while but not very much at a time," Paulsen said.

In Hills, the town's trees took the brunt of the storm. Homeowners spent the day cleaning up torn branches.

"It hit in just a few spots," Carol Scheerhor said.

Three large branches came down in Scheerhor's yard in a matter of minutes. But she's lucky.

"Our son up the street and around the block has some in the front yard of his house down. Also, he has a bit 20 foot tree in his house and the neighbor's garage next door," Scheerhor said.

Reports show the Hills area got three inches or more of rain during the storm.

But with it so dry, locals say the ground soaked it up and most of the water didn't make it into nearby creeks and rivers.
