It’s a tale of two Cinderellas who are trying to go to the same ball.
The University of South Dakota women’s basketball team seemed like a longshot to get to the finals. After a last second three pointer by Raeshel Contreras to defeat Western Illinois 96-94, it seemed like the Coyotes had used up their magic in the opening game.
The Yotes next opponent was the number one ranked South Dakota State Univeristy Jackrabbits, who haven’t lost a Summit League Tournament game. USD came out of the gate on fire and never looked back. They led the entire game and stunned the mighty Jackrabbits 72-58.
The other Cinderella is even more unlikely than the last. The Denver Pioneers entered the Tournament with a 7-22 record and faced the IPFW Mastodons with Summit League Women’s Player of the Year Ashley Hyde. The Pioneers upset Fort Wayne 79-73 in the first round.
Denver then went on to face the number two ranked IUPUI Jaguars. The two teams fought well into overtime with the Pioneers coming up with another upset 76-69.
Both teams look to keep their tournament magic going and look to go to their first NCAA Tournament.
