If you found yourself waiting in a long line at the Treasurer's Office to renew your license plates, you were certainly not alone. There are some people choosing to skip the long line and giving kiosks a try instead.
"They're an option on Saturdays, Sundays, nights and weekends. So, I think it gives you more options then they have before. I think they like that," Minnehaha County Treasurer Pam Nelson said.
The kiosks are aimed at making the process faster for people like Laura Steichen who are in a hurry to get things done.
"I had never used it in the past and just noticed it on my card, so that's why I'm doing it because I didn't get down there to Canton today," Steichen said.
All you have to do is follow the directions on the touch screen, and in a matter of minutes, you are back to the rest of your day.
"It's very helpful for people that are working from 8 to 5 and they don't get the time off to go down during the month to get it renewed, so people like me that work all day," Steichen said.
Steichen used the kiosk for the very first time and is now hoping kiosks are put in more locations. But she did notice one problem.
"Only downfall is, I don't know if my husband went and got his renewed, but his didn't print out. So, I don't know that he's going to do," Steichen said.
The argument in favor of these kiosks is that it speeds up the process, making sure that you get your renewals in before the deadline, but don't expect the long lines at the Treasurer's Office to go away anytime soon.
"There's still a whole lot of stuff you just have to come down here for. The only thing you can do at the kiosks is renew," Nelson said.
While she now prefers the kiosk, Steichen agrees.
"I think this is just one additional way. Probably more of them would be nice," Steichen said.
The kiosks like the ones in Sioux Falls are located in businesses that are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and anyone can use them regardless of where they live in the state.
