A local children's store is expanding in Sioux Falls. Kidtopia opened at The Bridges about seven years ago. This year, they're taking their specialty kids toys to the eastern side of town.
Fans of Kidtopia on 57th and Western will soon have a new location to find their favorite toys and kid crafts. The locally-owned business is opening a second store in Dawley Farms.
"I just thought, oh this would just be perfect for us because we could open that whole corridor and just be right there in the midst of it all," Kidtopia owner, Sheryl Nelson said.
Sheryl Nelson owns the kids' shop, and says Sioux Falls has been very kind to her business. She believes the Midwestern family values are part of the reason her niche boutique has been so popular.
"We really need that focus on the family. And that's just such an integral part of our family life, is our kids and playing together as a family," Nelson said.
Kidtopia opens its new location this fall, and will be the first locally-owned business in the Dawley Farms area.
Nelson says she's excited to bring her smaller shop to join the big chains, and hopes other smaller businesses will follow her lead.
"Think local. You know, you got to put your customers first. Think of them. They're our friends, they're our neighbors. Welcome them like you would welcome someone into your house," Nelson said. "Put their needs first, and they will definitely put you first on their list as well."
Nelson hopes to open the new store in Dawley Farms on October 1.
It's one of several recent announcements at the east side shopping center. Burlington Coat Factory, Christopher & Banks and a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant are also in the works.
