Kids With Disabilities Hunt In Fifth Year

September 15, 2012, 6:00 PM by Erich Schaffhauser

Kids With Disabilities Hunt In Fifth Year
CLARK, SD -

A group of kids headed to Clark has been looking forward to this weekend as the youth deer hunting season is underway.

The PDR Youth Deer Hunt provides a free hunting trip to kids with disabilities.

Blinds stood empty before the sun rose Saturday, waiting to hide a young hunter eager to take down a deer at the PDR Youth Hunt. In a lodge just outside Clark the hunters were ready for that and much more.

"Last year when I came it was a great experience. You meet a lot of good kids just for a good cause. Go deer hunting, have a good time, forget about your worries," Andre Bieber said.

Bieber's been on the hunt before. In fact, many boys have over the hunt's five year history. And this year a girl crashed the party.

"I'm not that type of girl that says, 'oh, I'm just going to not do it,' you know," Mikala Jones said.

Jones came with her dad and was happy to take aim at deer this year. Word around the lodge had her pegged a good shot.

Erich Schaffhauser: Is she a better shot than you?
Bieber: We'll have to find out.

"Depends if she can get one before me," Casey Pourier said.

She'll be too old to come back next year but encourages other girls to give the hunt a try. Cody Seehafer was too old this year but came back to help.

"Just be here to support everyone because it's just such an amazing experience," Seehafer said.

And Pourier will second that. Eric Tulowetzke will third it. In fact, this year, you can probably get up to a ninth on that statement.

"Just seeing all my old friends and getting to do this every year," Pourier said.

The hunt has grown in its five years, this year nine kids attended and that's up from three attending when it started in 2008.
