Kids Raise Money For Friend Battling Cancer

June 12, 2014, 4:59 PM by Hailey Higgins

Kids Raise Money For Friend Battling Cancer
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A four-year-old boy battling cancer is getting a major boost from his friends.

"We are doing a bake sale for Henry," Will Quick, Henry's brother, said.

Dozens of children are selling cookies, brownies and cupcakes at Grand Fun Alley Learning Center.

Henry is battling the toughest fight of his life: leukemia.

"You just don't expect that sort of thing so it was probably the worst news we've gotten," Henry's mom, Misty Ham-Quick, said.

The four-year-old has not responded well to treatment since his February diagnosis. Now doctors are hoping trial drugs will help him overcome the disease.

"We just did it so Henry can do his (transplant)," Will said.

With a possible bone marrow transplant later this year, his friends and six-year-old brother raise money for his treatment.

The children all attend Grand Fun Alley Learning Center. Kelsey Knutson says this bake sale is the kids' idea.

"They're so little and they don't understand but then they do everything and anything that they can," Knutson said.

Ahead of the bake sale, the kids gave up a day at Wild Water West to prepare for the event.

The goal was to raise $300. As of Thursday afternoon, they've received $2,500 and donations are still coming in.

"Not only are we so blessed to have the support for Henry, but it teaches them something. I think it teaches Will something important and the rest of the kids. We are incredibly proud of them," Ham-Quick said.

Grand Fun Alley Learning Center is located at 3704 S. Marion Road in Sioux Falls. The day care is also accepting donations after the bake sale.
