Kids Count Report: SD Ranks 26th

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
A new report on the health and well-being of American children ranks South Dakota 26th best overall in the nation.
The Annie E. Casey Foundation released its 2010 Kids Count Data Book late Monday on how the 50 states fared in 10 categories of children's health from 2000 to 2008. The report says the state improved in only two of the measures of child well-being: child death rate and percentage of teens neither in school nor high school graduates.
South Dakota got its worst mark in the percentage of children in single-parent homes. The report says the percentage jumped from 23 percent in 2000 to 30 percent in 2008. The state's overall rank last year was 21st. In 2008, it was 25th.
