Kids Against Hunger Seeking Assistance

Kids Against Hunger Seeking Assistance
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Tuesday night, KELO-TV will be helping a local nonprofit organization feed children in need.  Employees will help pack meals for Sioux Falls-based Kids Against Hunger as part of a special volunteer night. The organization is one of the station's Tradition of Caring recipients this year, which grants air time on KELOLAND-TV and My-UTV. And the need for help from the rest of the community is high.

For Art Wienke, sealing up meals to send to Haitian orphans couldn't come at a better time.

"It appears that most relief organizations have either backed out, or are no longer there. And so getting the food to Haiti is very critical," Wienke said.

Organizers with Kids Against Hunger hope to send food aid to children in Haiti, but need the community's help in getting it done.

Kids Against Hunger wants to send 44 palettes of meals over to Haiti this summer. That translates to about 300,000 meals.

And shipping it there will be expensive -- about $9,000. It's money that Wienke says could be better used to buy even more food. That's where they hope the public can step in.

"Donations are very important. We rely on donations entirely and by the good graces and the generosity of the Sioux Empire. We've received a lot of donations but we could always use more," Wienke said.

They could also use more help putting the meals together because it's especially difficult to find volunteers when school is out.

"In the summer time we traditionally slow down a little bit, and our packing schedule has some opportunities in it," Wienke said.

It's one of many opportunities coordinators hope the public will take advantage of, as hungry children wait thousands of miles away for their next meal.

Coordinators note that about one-third of the group's food aid stays within South Dakota for various programs. if you'd like more information on how you can help Kids Against Hunger, you can visit their website.
