KELO SportsZone: HS Girls Basketball Championship Preview

It's state basketball championship time across South Dakota.

This weekend, it is the High School Girls' teams playing for a shot to be state champions.

Looking at the Class AA bracket, the top team may be the state's best all-around team, Washington. The Warriors will take on Harrisburg. Second-seeded Mitchell offers the state's top player in Macy Miller as the Kernels draw Roosevelt.  The 4-5 matchup pits Sturgis against Spearfish, as the Spartans are making their first appearance at state since leaving Class A. O'Gorman and RC Stevens round out the first round.

CLASS AA TOURNAMENT IN BROOKINGS
First Round Quarterfinals: Thursday, March 13
12:00 p.m. CT: #1 SF Washington vs. #8 Harrisburg
1:45 p.m. CT: #4 Sturgis Brown vs. #5 Spearfish
6:00 p.m. CT: #2 Mitchell vs. #7 SF Roosevelt
7:45 p.m. CT: #3 SF O'Gorman vs. #6 Rapid City Stevens

In the Class A bracket, St. Thomas More enters play as the number one seed.  Winner is the number three seed.  The Warriors lone loss on the season was to number four seed Pine Ridge.  The team tallied 83 points in back-to-back playoff games, defeating Miller and Chamberlain to reach the state tournament.  Winner will play sixth-seed Mt. Vernon-Plankinton in Thursday's opening round.  The Titans won 10-of-12 to end the regular season, but one of those losses was to Winner.  Mt. Vernon-Plankinton claimed the Region 5A championship with a two point win over West Central.

7:45 p.m. MT: #3 Winner vs. #6 Mt. Vernon/Plankinton

Here's how the Class B bracket shakes out.  Sully Buttes is the number one seed.  The Chargers have lost only once this season, falling to De Smet in mid-January.  Sully Buttes beat Potter County in the Region 2B Championship.  The Chargers will play tournament newcomer Gayville-Volin.  The Raiders started the season 4-and-5, but got hot in the playoffs, winning three games in district before beating Freeman in the Region 5B championship, 44-40.  This is Gayville-Volin's first-ever appearance at state.  Lemmon may have Class B's toughest task, as the 22-and-1 Cowgirls play defending champion Warner in round one.
