James McVay will be executed for killing a Sioux Falls woman.
McVay has already pleaded guilty but mentally ill in the murder of Maybelle Schein. McVay killed Schein in 2011, stole her car and claimed to be heading to Washington, D.C., to kill the president.
Shortly after 6:15 p.m., the jury returned with its decision that McVay should be given the death penalty.
The jury started deliberations at 12:30 p.m. after hearing from final witnesses and listening to closing arguments from attorneys on both sides. It took the jury just over five hours to reach a verdict.
Among those in the courtroom to hear the decision is Sioux Falls Police Chief Doug Barthel and Schein's family members.
