Jury selection began Wednesday morning in James McVay's sentencing trial.
McVay pleaded guilty but mentally ill to killing 75-year-old Maybelle Schein in her Sioux Falls home back in 2011.
Authorities later caught up to him near Madison, Wisconsin.
In a jail house interview, McVay said Schein was "collateral damage" as he made his way to eventually kill President Barack Obama.
Jury selection could take up to two weeks.
