Jumping John Holland Crashes KELO's 60th Anniversary

Jumping John Holland Crashes KELO's 60th Anniversary

It may be one of the worst and horrific looking motorcycle stunts ever caught on tape and we're not talking about Evel Knievel. We're talking about Jumping John Holland of Sioux Falls.

As we continue to commemorate our 60th Anniversary, we dig back into the archives to watch Jumping John crash his way into history.

Jumping John Holland made a name for himself as a local daredevil. But this jump at the Sioux Empire Fairgrounds goes terribly wrong.

"It just didn't turn out, I think he was expecting too much out of the motorcycle in the way of speed, I don't think he was going as fast as he thought he was going to go," an unidentified man said.

What do you think happened? I think everything went as expected, except the ramp down there was too steep and the front shocks bottomed out, lifting the rear wheel stopping the traction, which wouldn't allow the speed."

The plan was to jump 50 Chevy Chevettes on the 4th of July 1984. Holland launches off the ramp, catches air, his parachute deploys, and then proceeds to mangle several cars while cart wheeling over top of them.

His body, not the bike, damages several cars badly.

"It was like an explosion when he hit, you could just see the body, you could see the parts of the motorcycle, I'm sad for him, I believe when we have to entertain in that way, when a man has to give up his life it's kind of foolish," another unidentified man said.

But believe it or not, Jumping John Holland survives the horrific crash as he's hauled away on a stretcher.

But it does little to erase the horrible images spectators just witnessed.

"How did it affect your 4th of July weekend? It's ruined," another man said.

Holland survived the crash. He wound up going to prison for drugs a few years later.

To see more exciting footage like that and other stories from our archives, be sure to tune into our hour long special Monday night immediately following our 6 o'clock news as we commemorate our 60th Anniversary.
