July Weather Outlook

July 3, 2014, 10:26 PM by Scot Mundt

July Weather Outlook

It was an unusual start to July with highs in the fifties and sixties.  A day that is typical from late April or early May. While there's no place to go but up from here, summer time heat may not be as prolonged as in past years.

The trend this month may end up being a waffling jet stream. At times there will be a heat ridge to allow highs in the eighties to near ninety, while at other times we'll be caught in a west to northwest flow to allow for scattered rain and cooler temps.

Average highs in KELOLAND start in the low to middle eighties and end in the eighties to near ninety. While many locations have slightly warmer temps by the end of the month, Mitchell takes a step back and the temp falls a degree from the first to the thirty-first.

By average, June is the wettest month. In July, the numbers go down slightly and vary greatly.  Rapid City has an average rainfall of just under two inches in July to Sisseton being just over three and a half inches.

As the jet moves back and forth, we'll have steady chances for rain to get get average or above average rain for the month.  It shouldn't be as heavy as June.
