Julio Expected to Miss Hawaii

August 8, 2014, 10:05 PM by Brady Mallory

Julio Expected to Miss Hawaii
HONOLULU, HI -

While residents of Hawaii clean up downed trees and powerlines, Hurricane Julio has been downgraded to a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour. Hours before its landfall early Friday morning, the National Weather Service downgraded Iselle from a hurricane to a tropical storm.

Brookings-native, and South Dakota State University alum, Stephanie Cooper, traveled to Honolulu for a business trip.  However, with meetings cancelled, she found herself with a day off.

"It seems kind of like a ghost town. I think most things have closed down and there has been an advisory to stay off the roads when you can," Cooper said.

KELOLAND News first introduced to Cooper on Thursday. All-in-all, Cooper said Tropical Storm Iselle was not so bad -- at least where she was at. She said it was mostly just a lot of wind and heavy rain.

"So, so far, things today have been fairly calm until the last hour, or so," Cooper said.

According to reports, a weakened Iselle hit the Big Island at about 2:30 a.m. The people there spent today cleaning up downed trees and powerlines.  A few islands over in Oahu, Cooper was safe inside of her beach-side hotel.

"The wind was loud, whipping against my balcony door," Cooper said.

Store shelves are empty, and the people are getting ready for a second round as Hurricane Julio makes it's way to Hawaii.

"Well, up until about 6 or 7 p.m. last night, I was sitting on the beach and the skies were blue. So, beautiful Hawaii weather.  Hopefully this will pass quickly and the tourists who are here can get back to vacationing," Cooper said.
