Two South Dakota judges say the 50-year-old Meade County Courthouse in Sturgis is so old and inefficient that it is impossible to uphold the expected dignity of courtroom proceedings.
Circuit Judges Warren Johnson and Jerome Eckrich say the courthouse does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the elevator works only sporadically and security measures are weak. They have asked the Meade County Commission to move ahead with a plan to upgrade the courthouse.
The commissioners want to improve the courthouse, but are reluctant to do all the proposed improvements at once. Commissioners have said they don't have the $7 million for the entire project and want to do the remodeling in phases over the next few years.
