Rodney Berget
SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Inmate Rodney Berget has been sentenced to death for his role in the murder of a South Dakota Correctional Officer.
Berget pleaded guilty to killing 63-year-old Ron 'RJ' Johnson during a failed escape attempt from the State Penitentiary on April 12.
The sentence handed down by Judge Bradley Zell comes following four days of testimony last week in a pre-sentencing hearing. On Thursday, Berget spoke in court and said he believes he should be sentenced to death for the slaying.
Zell sentenced Berget's confessed cohort and fellow inmate Eric Robert to death in November.
