U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson remembers former U.S. Sen. George McGovern as a close friend devoted to public service.
Johnson, a Democrat from South Dakota, released a statement in the wake of McGovern's death in Sioux Falls on Sunday. Johnson says McGovern was a dear friend to both him and his wife Barbara. He called McGovern a "compassionate man" with a deep devotion to public service.
Johnson says whether McGovern was serving as a bomber pilot in World War II, as an international leader in fighting hunger, as a talented teacher, or as Senator, "he served with uncompromising values and commitment."
Johnson says McGovern's leadership inspired many, including him, and he will be missed by countless people all over the world.
