Johns' Statements To Cellmates Questioned
July 14, 2010, 10:50 AM
PARKER, SD -
Should former cellmates be able to testify against the man accused of murdering a Turner County Sheriff's Deputy? That's just one of the questions being asked in court.
It's the first day of a two-day motions hearing in the Ethan Johns' murder case.
Johns is accused of killing Turner County Deputy Chad Mechels in March 2009. Wednesday morning in Parker, his defense attorney's asked that statements Johns made to cellmates in the Minnehaha County Jail not be allowed in the upcoming trial. What Johns said hasn't been made public.
One of the men Johns' talked to had worked for the state as an informant in other cases, but the state says they never asked him to get information in this case.
KELOLAND's Ben Dusnmoor is in the courtroom and will have details from the motions hearing later today on KELOLAND News.
