Jersey Boys Biggest Show Yet For Pavilion

May 20, 2014, 10:10 PM by Angela Kennecke

Jersey Boys Biggest Show Yet For Pavilion

It won a Tony Award for best musical in 2006.  Now the Broadway touring show Jersey Boys has arrived in Sioux Falls for seven performances.

While Sioux Falls gets its share of Broadway shows, this one is bigger than all the rest.

The jukebox musical, Jersey Boys--the story of the 1960's group The Four Seasons--has played in major metropolitan areas.  And it's now the biggest show to land in Sioux Falls.

"Do here by proclaim May 21-25 2014 Jersey Boys week in Sioux Falls and urge all businesses and citizens to join the salute to Jersey Boys and buy tickets," President of the Washington Pavilion Larry Toll said.

And buy they have, much to the relief of the Washington Pavilion leaders.

"It's the biggest risk the Pavilion has ever taken financially," Toll said.

That's because the Pavilion has to pay for the show up front.  To break even, the Pavilion had to sell 10,000 tickets to the Jersey Boys' seven performances.  To date, it has sold a little more than 11,000.   Each show will produce $100,000 in revenue.  In all, Jersey Boys is predicted to bring a lot of money into Sioux Falls.

So how do the seven performances of Jersey Boys have a $1 million impact on the city? It starts with the 50-plus cast members and crew members who will spend money here to all the audience members who will fill these seats.

"A lot of hotels this weekend are booked because of Jersey Boys.  Those 160 cities and towns in South Dakota that are coming as well as Minnesota and Iowa and 20 some other states--those people will come, spend a few days here--some will buy tickets to more than one show," Toll said.

This musical also has the ability to bring in the male demographic, which isn't the case for many shows.  Toll says Jersey Boys may pave the way for other big Broadway hits to play in this grand hall.

"But the biggest part of this is the ability to bring a show like this to Sioux Falls," Toll said.

Four years ago, Little House on the Prairie was the biggest musical to hold several performances in Sioux Falls.  The Pavilion says many people want to see Wicked come to town, but that is a $1 million commitment.
