Javers Sentenced for Beating Wife

A Sioux Falls man who has a long history of violence against women and was questioned five years ago in the murder of his girlfriend is behind bars tonight.
Gary Javers was sentenced to 10 months in jail today on simple assault charges for beating his current wife.

But the unsolved murder of Pamela Halverson was brought up in court today more than once.
Authorities have never called Gary Javers a suspect in the murder of Pamela Halverson,   But they haven't ruled him out either. 

Halverson's body was found decomposing in her car in August of 1999.

Police say Javers and Halverson's, then, nine year old son were the last people to see her alive.  Javers talked with KELOLAND NEWS about her disappearance.

"I don't know where she's at.  I wish I did know where she's at cause I'm tired of feeling this way," said Javers.

Halverson had taken out a protection order against Javers saying he threatened to kill her. 

Today in court before sentencing, prosecutors told the judge of Javers' violent past, charged six times with assault or aggravated assault against women he lived with or had been dating including Halverson.

"We did recount for the judge today several incidents in which in domestic assaults or protection order violations where he had made explicit threats to kill the victim," said Minnehaha County Deputy State's Attorney, Tom Hensley.

Javer's wife defended her husband saying she was drunk when she called police and lied about being hit in the face by Javers.

The defense asked the judge not to sentence Javers to jail, saying for the last five years he's been punished enough by the public, referring to the media attention surrounding Javers connection to Halverson.

While the abuse case against his wife is closed tonight, the mystery surrounding the death of Halverson remains open and still unsolved.

"Investigators would gladly speak with anyone who knows anything about that case, they can call and remain anonymous or give their name if they choose in regards to that incident," said Hensley.

Before he was sentenced, Javers made a brief statement saying a jury convicted him and he was willing to accept whatever sentence the judge handed down.
