January Outlook

KELOLAND rang in the New Year on the cold side, with many locations remaining below average on Tuesday. The start of a new year might bring the start of a new weather pattern. 

This month will give KELOLAND more shots of cold and snow. There's a good chance for a January thaw too. 

Since 1990, there have only been three years where Sioux Falls didn't see highs rise into the 40s. So, you can expect some above average days this month, but for the most part it looks like January temperatures will close to or slightly below average.

While some computer models are trying to bring snow to southeast KELOLAND around January 10, if the weather cycle we started in October repeats this month, you should expect hits of snow around January 16 and 23.

Looking back to 1950, Sioux Falls averages seven inches of snow in January, followed by 6.9 inches in Aberdeen. Rapid City usually receives just under five while Pierre gets just more than four and a half.  The Hills average nearly two feet this month.
