Janklow Known As Brash, Savvy Politician

November 4, 2011, 5:03 PM by Perry Groten

Janklow Known As Brash, Savvy Politician
An entire generation of South Dakotans grew up with Bill Janklow holding public office.

Janklow was known as a brash and savvy politician whose career took him to the heights of power, only to fall from the public's grace in a fatal car crash.

Janklow's career goes back more than 30 years. Janklow served 16 years as South Dakota governor, the longest tenure in state history.

As governor, he helped make Sioux Falls a mecca for credit card companies. He also oversaw the recovery efforts from a deadly tornado that struck Spencer in 1998.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 2002, but a crash in Moody County that killed a Minnesota motorcyclist forced Janklow to resign from office after a jury convicted him of vehicular manslaughter.
