James McVay has formally been sentenced to death for the 2011 murder of 75-year-old Maybelle Schein.
A Minnehaha County jury returned a verdict last month sentencing McVay to death by lethal injection for the crime. Tuesday, Judge Peter Lieberman formally stated McVay's sentence.
"I don't have a lot to say here. This is a situation where a jury's verdict has a lot more weight than what I could say," Lieberman said.
McVay pleaded guilty but mentally ill in December of 2011 for a murder he committed earlier in the year. McVay told investigators Schein's murder was part of a cross-country plot to assassinate the president on the Fourth of July.
McVay's death sentence will be automatically reviewed by the South Dakota Supreme Court.
