BROOKINGS, S.D. – Megan Waytashek scored 20 points and Gabby Boever added 15 points as South Dakota State topped the South Dakota women’s basketball team 88-69 in Frost Arena on Sunday. It was the seventh straight win for SDSU and the fifth loss in the last seven games for South Dakota.
Waytashek shot only 4-of-13, but was 10-for-12 at the free throw line, while Boever was 6-of-8 shooting. Steph Paluch added 13 points and tallied five assists for the Jacks (16-7, 7-0). Waytashek and Hannah Strop led SDSU in rebounds with six each.
The Jacks shot 48 percent from the field in the game while USD (11-11, 2-5) shot 37 percent.
The Coyotes were led by Nicole Seekamp’s 13 points and five assists while Bridget Arens scored a season-high 12 points. Margaret McCloud led USD rebounding with seven. The Coyote bench scored 45 of USD’s 69 points.
South Dakota State led 53-35 at the end of the first half, shooting 53 percent from the field and hitting on 9-of-18 shots from the 3-point arc. The Jacks opened up a double digit lead during a five minute 19-7 run to lead 38-24 with 5:32 remaining in the first. USD couldn’t close within 12 points the rest of the way.
SDSU held a 30-22 edge in points in the paint and a 6-0 edge in blocked shots. The Jacks shot 25-of-31 (80 percent) at the free throw line while USD was 26-of-41 (63 percent).
The Coyotes will start the second half of their Summit League schedule by hosting Denver on Friday at 7 p.m.
