With the New Year here more people will be buying gym memberships to either begin a healthier lifestyle or work on their physique. With new workout goals in mind, it is still okay to skip the gym a few times.
"Especially if you are consistent about it getting back after one or two days is fine. A week is sometimes a little tougher to get back into the routine again," Karla O'Connor said.
O'Connor is a regular at Sanford Wellness Center in Sioux Falls. Even for her, O'Conner says, there are still a few days she stays home.
"I usually skip Sundays and lately I've been skipping the holidays," O'Connor said.
Rachel Breidenbach, a senior exercise specialist says if you are feeling ill, it’s a good time to stay home.
"If you have a cold it's probably okay to work out, but if you have a fever or vomiting or anything like that I'd stay home and rest," Breidenbach said.
If you haven't been sleeping well, that's another reason to stay out of the gym.
"If you've had one bad night of sleep it might be okay, but if you've had several nights of sleep and you're exhausted you probably are not going to want to work out," Breidenbach said.
Breidenbach says working out while drained can cause injuries and if you find yourself with an injury, it is very important that you either rest or find another activity.
"If you have a sprain ankle or a knee injury you could probably modify your workout and do something upper body," Breidenbach said.
If you do decide to skip a day or two make sure it doesn't last too long. Keeping your workout routine will help you have a year of workout success.
