The Brandon Valley High School football team takes the field preparing for the upcoming football season, but their post-practice routine is probably a little different than other teams.
"It replenishes the muscles probably faster than anything else if you are getting it in during that 30-minute, 60-minute time window," Brandon Valley Head Football Coach Chad Garrow said.
It is chocolate milk. It may seem odd, but experts say 16 ounces of low-fat chocolate milk is the best to recover after a hard workout.
It is not just something you can find on the field at Brandon Valley, Sanford sports dietitian Hannah Nelson says this is something many athletes use.
"It is packaged perfectly naturally because it has the nutrients your body needs at that time," Nelson said.
Nelson says unlike many sports drinks, low-fat chocolate milk is naturally packed with the perfect amount of high-quality protein and carbohydrates. And if you're wondering whether white milk offers the same nutrients, Nelson say chocolate is the way to go.
"Chocolate just gets a little bit more attention because it has a little extra carbohydrate because of the chocolate," Nelson said.
Exercise has many health benefits, but it can also cause some minor tissue damage, which is why chocolate milk is the perfect power drink to keep athletes going.
