Investigators Ask For Help In Arson, Iowa Body Case

July 22, 2010, 5:52 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Investigators Ask For Help In Arson, Iowa Body Case
A body found in Iowa and a burned house in Sioux Falls; investigators say the two are related, but at this point aren't saying how.

"Because we're still pretty much in some really preliminary stages of this investigation, we can't release what that relationship is right now," Detective Sean Kooistra of the Sioux Falls Police Department said.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was called to a house at 900 E Hermosa on Monday afternoon. Thursday, charred belongings are at the home that's at the center of an arson investigation. But police want to know more about who may have been there.

"It was the type of house where some people live in there for a short period of time, some people stay there, that type of situation," Kooistra said.

Investigators also want to know whether anyone saw or talked with two men a witness saw walking near Lake Alvin Tuesday afternoon.  They both have tattoos and one may have had a goatee. They weren't far from where the body was found Tuesday night.

"There may be no ties at all, but at this point, we simply don't know because we don't know who those subjects are or why they were in the area. It could very well be that we may be able to identify those two people or speak with them and they may have absolutely nothing to do with anything that's taken place here," Kooistra said.

As investigators pull together the pieces, they say it's going to be critical that all of the agencies involved work together and communicate because this could be a difficult case to crack.

"When you have a crime scene, with these two places being related, that really expands our crime scene very large and that will make investigations difficult, there's no doubt about it," Kooistra said.

An autopsy was performed on the body Thursday in Des Moines and that could give investigators a better idea of when the victim died.

If you have any information that could help investigators, you're asked to call Sioux Falls Police at 605-367-7234.
