Department of Corrections staff prevented an escape attempt by an inmate earlier today.
Alonzo Young was transported by ambulance from the Jameson Annex of the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls to a local hospital. Authorities said Young claimed to have taken a substantial amount of medication and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation.
At approximately 11:25 a.m. Monday, July 7, while using the bathroom in the hospital room, Young brandished a metal object approximately 8.5 inches long and waved it at DOC staff members. The two staff members were able to confiscate the object. Hospital security staff assisted in restraining Young to a hospital bed.
There were no injuries reported. Young was contained to the hospital room during the incident. He was returned back to the Jameson Annex.
Young is serving a 10-year sentence with two years suspended for first-degree robbery. He is also serving a consecutive 12-year, 6-month sentence with six years suspended for attempted first-degree robbery and another consecutive 4-year sentence with one year suspended for simple assault on a law enforcement officer. All of the convictions are from Minnehaha County.
In 2011, Young was convicted for robbing Taco John's on West 12th Street in Sioux Falls.
