Initiated Measure 15: New TV Commercial

October 2, 2012, 5:00 PM by Don Jorgensen

Initiated Measure 15: New TV Commercial
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Five weeks from Tuesday, voters will head to the polls to elect a president.  But a local campaign is heating up the airwaves in KELOLAND.

Moving South Dakota Forward debuted its first television ad Tuesday on Initiated Measure 15.  The measure would raise the state's sales tax by one penny to help fund education and Medicaid.

From the ad: Every parent knows education is the key to success for children, but last year the state cut tens of millions of dollars from K-12 education.  Those cuts are hurting our kids.

"What we want to accomplish with this first ad is really be an introduction to the voters of South Dakota," Moving South Dakota Forward's Andy Wiese said.

Wiese says the new television ad is trying to outline some of the effects budget cuts by the state legislature have meant to our kids.

"We've seen across the state class sizes starting to increase; other education opportunities starting to be rolled back," Wiese said.

Initiated Measure 15 would raise the state sales tax by one penny and generate approximately $180 million per year to be divided evenly between K-12 public education and Medicaid.

"What we think is, this is a good investment for the future of South Dakota.  What we are looking at is a one penny increase and with that penny, we will be able to provide kids with the type of education that they need to have a positive student achievement moving forward," Wiese said.

But the group opposing Measure 15 wants you to vote no in November, calling it the largest tax increase in South Dakota history.

They didn't want to comment for this story. They are going to be holding two news conferences on Wednesday in Sioux Falls and Rapid City.  Our cameras will be there as they explain why voters should reject the proposed $180 million tax increase.
