Information Sought In RC Murder Investigation

January 8, 2013, 6:09 PM by Derek Olson

Information Sought In RC Murder Investigation
RAPID CITY, SD -

Authorities in Rapid City are investigating a deadly shooting that took place on Monday night.  Nearly 24 hours out from the crime, police are still looking for whoever pulled the trigger.

Tuesday afternoon, authorities released the name of the shooting victim, 33-year old Eustacio Marrufo.  He is the victim of the town's first homicide of 2013.

"About 7:00 last night, we got a call that there was a shooting in the parking lot of the Dakota Rose motel on East Boulevard.  When we arrived, there was a man down and he was deceased," Rapid City Police Captain Doug Thrash said.

"It's unfortunate what happened last night with the person losing their life.  Unfortunately, some of the folks that are in the area have a hard time," neighboring business owner Linda Kelly said.

Investigators believe that Marrufo had been living between the Rapid City area and Kansas.  While they aren't sure why he was shot, they're confident he was targeted.

"It isn't a random act; the public is safe.  I truly believe that they knew each other and there was bad blood, I guess," Thrash said.

Now, authorities are asking the public for tips so those responsible for the killing can be brought to justice.

"I think that people will know.  There will be people out in the public that will know what happened and they will tell us," Thrash said.

For those who live and work in the area, Monday night's bloodshed is a 2013 first that they could have done without.

"Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with the family and those involved, and of course for the officers as well that have to respond and deal with those situations.  Always with them as well," Kelly said.

The investigation into Marrufo's murder is being jointly conducted by the Rapid City Police Department and Pennington County Sheriff's Department.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact police at 605-394-4134, or send an anonymous tip by texting ‘RCPD’ and the information to 847411. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online.
