Indoor Pool Plan Stays Afloat

September 14, 2012, 4:52 PM by Shawn Neisteadt

Indoor Pool Plan Stays Afloat
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Visit the Spellerberg Pool near 26th Street and Western Avenue in Sioux Falls this time of year and you'll find that the water is drained.  But momentum for a plan that could replace the pool with an indoor aquatic facility seems to be flowing along.

"There is a lot of time when it is too cold to be at the outdoor pool.  So it would be nice to have that option," Megan Tschetter said.

Tschetter and a group of Sioux Falls moms bring their children to the park each week.  When the pool is open, that's where they go. Having the option to visit a public pool all year is an idea the group likes.

"During the winter time we don't always have something to do with the kids.  So I think it would be a great idea to do with the kids in the winter time," Tschetter said.

"For me it means a step in the right direction.  Whether is a big step or a small step, that can be debated.  But it was actually a step in the right direction," Russ Miller said.

Russ Miller is with the group "South Dakota Swimming" and has two children on the Snow Fox team.  He says if built right, an indoor facility could help local swim teams and bring five or more swim meets to town each year.

"Those are probably 500 swimmers and they bring a couple parents a piece generally and they've got a following or fan base that comes and watches them swim on the state level, so a tremendous economic impact," Miller said.

However, there's a long way to go before any plan becomes concrete.  While the city has set aside some money, no solid plans have been formed and city leaders are seeking more input from the community.

Plans for a similar indoor aquatic center were voted down in December 2005.
