Immigration Charges

May 1, 2014, 4:30 AM

Six western South Dakota residents have been sentenced for immigration-related crimes stemming from fraudulent contracts with the U.S. Forest Service.

The individuals from Rapid City were sentenced for their roles in a scheme that hired people living in the country illegally to perform work under contracts with the federal agency.

U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson says the six people, five of whom are relatives, committed their crimes between January 2008 and May 2013.

Sixty-year-old Angel Munoz-Escalante, 51-year-old Aurelio Munoz-Escalante and 57-year-old Rogelio Escalante were sentenced for false statement charges.

Fifty-five-year-old Barbara Munoz was sentenced for misprision of a felony, while 31-year-old Miguel Soto and 55-year-old Pascual Munoz were sentenced for continuing unlawful employment of aliens.

Only Angel and Aurelio Munoz-Escalante will serve prison time.
