Ice Cream To Benefit Canton Flood Victims

July 3, 2014, 6:00 PM by Matt Holsen

Ice Cream To Benefit Canton Flood Victims

Canton is still recovering after heavy flooding damaged roughly 90-percent of the homes in town. In an effort to help raise money and awareness for flood victims, First Bank and Trust in Canton held an ice cream social Thursday.

Ice cream at nine in the morning may be unusual timing, but you don't have to ask these kids twice.

Matt: Now you get to hang out with them all day after they ate ice cream?
Babysitter Courtney Ekle: Yep, they're going to be all sugared up.

Six-year-old Jewel Gannon took time out of her busy summer schedule to make an appearance. She stopped by with her family to do something she gets to do...

"Only on my birthdays," Gannon said.

It's all fun and games for these youngsters but many paying a visit are here for a good cause, to support flood victims with free will donations.

You can't do a story with ice cream involved and not take part. The bank put on this event because so many of its customers were in need.

Nancy Bitterman with First Bank & Trust has seen the damage first hand. One of her employees had extensive damage in her basement.

"Fortunately it wasn't sewage but to have seven feet of water in her basement was really devastating to her. We've all been trying to help her in any way we can as we've been trying to help as many citizens in our community as we can," Nancy Bitterman said.

Ice cream and donations help although young Jewel, who saw a little water come into her home, hasn't let it wreck her summer plans.

"Just me and Grace been in our room playing Barbies," Gannon said.

Dairy Queen and Sunshine helped the bank provide the ice cream for the social.
