Ice Arena Reaches Another Milestone

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Those trying to raise enough money to build a new three-rink ice arena in Sioux Falls have reached another milestone.
The Ice Sports Association has raised more than half of the $2.5 million in private money. But the fundraising is far from over.
A $7.5 million facility has long been a dream for hockey and ice skating enthusiasts in Sioux Falls. But the cold hard fact is it's still only a dream.
"It just can't happen soon enough. We are to the point of our fundraising we can confidently say this project is going to happen, but the question becomes how quickly can we make it happen," Ice Sports Association executive director Sue Salter said.
Salter says once they raise $2.5 million in private money, an anonymous donor will commit another million dollars.
The city has committed $1.5 million in its 2013 CIP. They also plan to get $1.5 million from Chamber of Commerce Community Appeals campaign.
"In many ways, the next million dollars we raise is a very critical component to triggering the rest of our fundraising efforts," Salter said.
The new facility will not only replace the aging Minnehaha County Ice and Rec Center that's now 30 years old and has had structural and maintenance issues, but also provide three sheets of ice with the option of adding a fourth.
"For us, when we go out and sell this project, people get it right away and they understand the need. That this truly is a need and not a want," Salter said.
Sanford has leased out 11 acres to the Ice Sports Association. The lease will last 99 years.
