Drivers who travel on Rice Street between Sioux Falls and Brandon in the morning or at dusk have likely seen a deer or two on the side of the road. The road has one of the highest deer-car crash rates in the state.
It's something the Game Fish and Parks and Sioux Falls Police Department have been working to change through a special deer hunt. It's been going on for three years now and officials say it has been a success.
Over the past two years combined, hunters have harvested more than 40 deer from north of Rice Street within Sioux Falls city limits.
GF&P officials and Sioux Falls police say it helps keep the herd controlled and traffic accidents down. Hunters who've received access permits in the past say it's a great place to hunt.
"I should buy a lottery ticket. I can't tell you how jazzed I was when I found out. Yet again, I got a tag, access permit, and it happens to be in the location, the same place I was last year. So I know where I'm putting my stand already. I know where to go; I know where the deer are," hunter Jon Eckrich said.
Eckrich was one of the 23 people who were successful last year and hopes this year goes the same way.
