Hundreds of people will be better protected against the flu virus this season. There was a steady flow of people at Thursday's KELO TV-Lewis Drug flu shot clinic.
Marjorie Havens wanted to knock one more thing off her to-do-list today by getting a flu shot.
"I just got back from a vacation to Hawaii," Havens said.
To maintain that active lifestyle, at 87-years-old Havens knows she has to stay healthy.
"Eat good, sleep good," Havens said.
And get a flu shot. It may seem too early in the year, but the Centers for Disease Control says if you roll up your sleeve today you will be protected for the entire flu season.
"The CDC recommends you get the flu shot as soon as possible. So that's why we have our clinic now. We've even had confirmed cases of the flu already. So it's important to get the vaccine as soon as possible," Lewis Drug Pharmacist Gretchen Schilling said.
Another misconception some people have is that the flu shot protects your from the stomach flu, but it actually helps prevent influenza, which can be deadly.
"You get high fevers, chills, and body aches; those are the most common symptoms," Schilling said.
Schilling also says you can not get the flu from the flu shot.
"Sometimes people have symptoms such as chills or a low-grade fever after they get the shot and that is coincidental," Schilling said.
"Plus you can brag you got your flu shot, another year," Havens said.
And it's another year Havens hopes to stay flu-free.
The KELO TV-Lewis Drug flu shot clinic lasts until 9 p.m. Thursday. Just stop by any Sioux Falls Lewis Drug location. The cost is $28; it is covered by Medicare.
