The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is asking for your help handling its current cat population. Right now, there are so many cats at the shelter there's no space to hold them.
If you're looking for a cat, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is bursting at the seams with felines.
"We, everyday right now, have about 250 to 300 cats either in our building or in foster homes. So we're just full," Kori Baade, Executive Director for the Sioux Empire Humane Society said.
The Humane Society doesn't kill animals for space, and the shelter is currently undergoing construction. So space is limited.
Because there is so little space available here in the Humane Society, they've started using storage areas like this, to hold some of the extra cats.
"We have taken cats in offices, break rooms, bathrooms," Baade said.
The Humane Society is asking people to hold onto their cats for a few more weeks, until there's more space available. They suggest finding a suitable home for the cat with family and friends, and the Humane Society will even help with food.
Executive Director Kori Baade says they want what's best for the animals, and that doesn't include breaking the law to get rid of them.
"It is a crime to abandon a pet. So, we've even had people dump them on our gravel road out here. Right when we've told them no. That is a crime. And we will prosecute them," Baade said.
For anyone who would like to help out, the Humane Society is always looking for good foster homes or permanent families to love these furry critters.
"There is a lot of nice cats here. I mean, very social cats. A lot of them are fixed. A lot of them have been declawed if you need that to happen. Some of them have been with other animals, so if you have dogs there's a lot of really social cats here that like dogs. So there's just a lot of beautiful cats. There's just too many," Baade said.
