Commissioners in South Dakota's Hughes County are considering doubling the county's wheel tax to raise more money for roads.
Commissioners have given initial approval to doubling the tax of $2 per wheel and $8 per vehicle. A final vote is set for July 2.
Proposals to increase the county wheel tax have failed in the past. Voters overwhelmingly defeated a referred measure in 1995, and in 2008 county commissioners voted narrowly to reject another proposal after a Pierre resident threatened to refer it.
