The next time you hire a licensed contractor make sure you do your homework. There are over 2,700 contractors licensed in Sioux Falls, but how well do you know them?
As a woman who buys and resells homes, Lisa Schultz of Sioux Falls is constantly hiring contractors to make repairs and renovations.
"I just have to put in a shower, vanity and toilet," Schultz said.
Who Schultz hires to do that work, depends a lot on their criminal backgrounds.
"Yes I do consider that because I am a single woman," Schultz said.
Schultz says, in the past, she's been hit on before by contractors she's trusted and invited into her homes. While some contractors may seem honest, they could be registered sex offenders.
"That wouldn't surprise me at all, in any industry there's a certain percentage of the population hat falls into that category," Schultz said.
KELOLAND News did extensive research for this story comparing the long list of licensed contractors in the city with the long list of registered sex offenders in both Minnehaha and Lincoln Counties.
Several names popped up on both lists. The City says when it comes to licensing a contractor, it doesn't screen for sexual predators or criminal backgrounds.
"If there's a real concern, that homeowner would have to do their homework and ask those questions by all means," building services director Ron Bell said.
Sunday night at 10 on Eye on KELOLAND, we'll give you a closer look at both lists and unveil the names we found in a KELOLAND News investigation.
