How The Wessington Springs Tornado Happened

How The Wessington Springs Tornado Happened
WESSINGTON SPRINGS, SD -

Wednesday's storms will be an event that won't be easily forgotten. The Wessington Springs tornado changed lives forever. So how did it happen?

For starters, there was more than enough heat energy caused by temperatures reaching the 80s. Along with the heat, there was plenty of moisture in the air with dew points in the 70s. And a front moved through KELOLAND, giving the spark the storm needed. So the basic ingredients for storms were all there, heat energy, moisture, and a trigger. All needed to be done was wait for the conditions to be perfect, which happened in the evening.

As the storm grew south, it moved into an area of higher wind energy that allowed for rotation to happen and it just happened to all come together and move through Wessington Springs.

What a way to end an active weather week. The rest of the work week is forecasted to be quieter, little warmer with highs in the mid-80s. The weekend has chances for more storms but we'll quickly dry back out.
