House Candidates React To Early Voting Claims

October 20, 2010, 10:12 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

House Candidates React To Early Voting Claims
SIOUX FALLS, SD - The last few days of South Dakota's elections have been filled with South Dakota Republicans criticizing Democrats for how rallies on South Dakota's reservations were handled.

Food was offered at the rallies where Native Americans were encouraged to vote. And, the two women running for South Dakota's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives are responding to the allegations.

"It's really unfortunate that the state Republican Party would try to stoke racial tensions. If they had concerns why not raise them the first day of early voting? And, why did they wait? They are really being so disrespectful to Native American voters in this instance," Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin said.

"I think South Dakotans deserve fair and honest elections and that's the real question here, so we need to make sure we have legitimate elections that we follow election law, and that at the end of the day we can count on the results we've got because everything was done in an honest and fair way," Republican U.S. House candidate Kristi Noem said.

The South Dakota Attorney General's Office says its received complaints about the rallies and is looking into the information like it would in any other case.
