Residents in a neighborhood just off Tea-Ellis Road and 48th Street woke up to what they say sounded like a "freight train" just after 3 a.m. Friday.
As it turns out, straight line winds with gusts up to 75 miles per hour blew through the area.
Several garages collapsed, and some homeowners saw parts of their roofs torn off.
No injuries have been reported. Some of the families will be able to stay in their damaged homes, but others will have to bunk with relatives for awhile.
The National Weather Service was at the scene Friday trying to determine why only some homes saw damage, while their neighbors' homes didn't have a scratch.
