Homan To Step Down At End Of Contract

Homan To Step Down At End Of Contract

Sioux Falls Schools will have a new leader after June 30, 2015.

Dr. Pam Homan announced on Friday in a memo to staff that she will step down when her contract expires, telling employees she will "hand the baton to a new leader."

Homan says she has been thinking about stepping down from education for some time and will not renew her contract which ends June 30, 2015.

While she didn't get specific about her decision to leave, she did say she has opportunities she will consider after she steps down.  In the meantime, she says her focus is continuing the district's mission for the next 10 months.

When her contract is up, Homan will have been superintendent of the state's largest district for 11 years.  She's spent her 34 year education career as a teacher, principal and administrator, with the last 25 years as an employee of the Sioux Falls School District.

Homan says she's looking forward to the next ten months of planning and hopes to provide a smooth transition to next school year.

Here is the memo Homan sent to staff Friday morning:

First of all, congratulations to another great start of the school year!  Because of your dedication and skills, you make a complex endeavor appear easy!

As we begin this year's goals and strategies (to be presented to the School Board Monday night), I want you to know that when I wrapped up last year's progress with the School Board, I informed them this would be my final year in the District.

June 30, 2015 will be the end of my 25th year in the District.
June 30, 2015 will be the end of my current 5-year contract.
June 30, 2015 will be the end of my 11th year as Superintendent.

July 1, 2015 is the perfect time for me to hand the baton to a new leader.  The District is at the top of its game and during the last 11 years we have truly moved the District in a direction from good to great.  As a team we have relentlessly focused on educating and preparing each student to succeed in our changing world.  We have accomplished and anchored pathways and programs for our students and staff. Each of you has played a vital role in our success.

As I have always said, "Each day is a new opportunity."  I am thankful to have had the opportunity to be surrounded with your passion, commitment and service.  I look forward to the next 10 months planning for the future as always and providing for a smooth transition from this great school year to the next.

Thank you for what you do each day,
