Highmore Shooting Update

October 30, 2007, 5:56 PM by Don Jorgensen

Highmore Shooting Update
There are still more questions than answers tonight surrounding that shooting in Highmore Sunday night that critically injured the town's finance officer, Pam Huber.

Huber's husband, former Highmore Police Chief, Ken Huber has been questioned in the case, but isn't being called a suspect at this time.

As the investigation continues, the small community is pulling together, praying Pam will recover.

A new day brings new hope that prayers will be answered, along with the questions and rumors that have been circulating in this small central South Dakota town of 850 people.

Surrounded by yellow tape, local law enforcement and DCI agents returned to Huber's house today to collect more evidence. Authorities haven't said whether they believe the shooting was an accident or released the type of gun.

In the meantime, people are wearing purple ribbons to show their support for Pam, a friend and co-worker.

"People are shocked, we are very close knit community, the first responders are all people who know her well," said Vikki Day, Highmore mayor.

Highmore Mayor Vikki Day has known Pam for more than 20 years.

"She's brilliant she's an excellent finance officer, we all rely on her to know laws, budgets, finance and grants," said Day.

Besides her dedication to her job, Day says Pam is also very involved in the community.

"Any pool fundraisers Pam was always there, she liked to work behind the scenes and not be in front and not speak," said Day.

But right now, it's the town that is at a loss for words.

"We miss her and praying for her and her family and children, said Day.

As for Ken Huber, Day described him as a good police chief, always helpful and passionate to the community and taught the DARE program in Miller, which emphasizes keeping kids off drugs.
