Heavy Snow Band Strikes The Northeast

January 29, 2013, 6:10 PM by Ben Cathey

Heavy Snow Band Strikes The Northeast

If you live near Aberdeen, chances are you did some shoveling Tuesday morning.

A frontal band pushed through northern KELOLAND Monday night and quickly dumping snow in a line from Miller and Sisseton.
A twin snow band formed from Gettysburg to Leola.

Usually these cores of heavy snow or rain are narrow and this system spanned about 40-miles across.  Cutoffs are drastic in these storms.  In just over 20 miles, snow totals dropped from nine inches to less than two.

Aberdeen collected eight inches, much of it coming within a four-hour period of heavy snowfall.   That translates to almost seven-tenths of an inch of moisture.  Sisseton picked up nearly seven inches, but in Milbank, only two inches fell.  Gettysburg received half a foot.

We also use VIPIR to analyze how much snow fell on isolated parts of the northeast prairie where drifting makes measuring difficult.   Northwest of Aberdeen saw a narrow band dropping 10 inches of snow.  On the nose of Coteau Des Prairies, close to a foot fell in rural areas.

Now with Arctic air on the way, expect little melting and plenty of cold mornings.
