Heavy Flooding Hits Luverne

June 15, 2014, 5:21 PM by Leland Steva

Heavy Flooding Hits Luverne
LUVERNE, MN -

The big story is the heavy rain causing massing flooding across Eastern South Dakota into Western Minnesota. Roads are washed out and basements are filled with water.

Interstate 90 was closed this morning at the Minnesota, South Dakota Border. Currently the interstate is open across Minnesota, but there are a few single lane closures to be aware of because of standing water.

Residents at the city of Luverne estimate they were hit with over 6 inches of rain last night causing Rock River to overflow inside city limits. There was a no travel advisory in the city yesterday. The water is still filling up parks and some city streets, and even uprooted trees and knocked over city streetlights. People were taking in the raging river by stopping and taking pictures. Some residents of the city say they've never seen a flood like this Luverne.

“Raining mostly the whole day. Lot of rain, and too much to handle for the river,” Luverne resident Nathan Meyer said.

Blue Mounds State Park confirmed the flooding washed away the spillway. At 4 p.m., people in Rock Rapids started sandbagging to help fight the powerful water coming down river from Luverne.
