SIOUX FALLS, SD -
An estimated 2,500 people took part in the Eastern South Dakota Heart Walk at Falls Park in Sioux Falls on Saturday, August 17. Walkers could choose between a one mile route or a three mile route.
Before the walk, participants could join in a brief stretch.
Survivors were given red baseball caps and allowed to start the walk off for everyone else.
Many participants were walking for friends, family, or parents, and some were walking for their kids.
“This is Gabe Long and he is my youngest who had a congenital heart defect when he was born. So, he had open heart surgery when he was five days old, so I’m walking for him and all the other children in our organization,” Sherry Long said
While organizers won’t know how much was raised until next week, they are confident they will surpass the $220,000 goal that was set for the event.
All proceeds go to the American Heart Association. If you couldn’t make it out to Falls Park and would still like to donate go to www.southdakotaheartwalk.org.
